Leaving aside all the questions of plot logic (the treatment of alternate history is quite as flawed as you say), it struck me that original Star Trek tried for a balance between action, character relationships, and sensawunda. The new treatment had sensawunda turned down and action turned waaaay up. Not to my liking.
